Hamilton girls pile up points in rout of Hale

Jan. 28, 2014

Bill Scasny has coached some very successful basketball teams, dating back to his days at Divine Savior Holy Angels, when those teams were annually considered among the state's best.

On Friday at West Allis Hale, the Hamilton varsity girls basketball team looked every bit those teams' equal, playing a near-flawless game against the Huskies.

Everything was clicking for the Chargers, who dominated the Greater Metro Conference match up, 72-44, improving to 10-4 overall and 5-1 in the league.

By intermission, Hamilton had put up 53 points on the scoreboard.

"In my 20 years as a head coach, I can't remember ever scoring 53 points in a half," Scasny said. "The kids just executed, forcing turnovers, making shots and playing unselfish with the basketball. They played to each other's strengths."

Molly Diehl was a sparkplug in the first quarter, scoring 10 points. She finished the night with 15 points and four steals.

Hannah Menzia ended up with 14 points and six rebounds. Sammy Hagenow added 10 points.

Taylor Klug, who was the center of attention for the Huskies, had 9 points, six rebounds and five assists.

"Taylor just took what they gave her and she didn't force anything," Scasny said. "They played a box and one on us but she was still very effective, distributing the ball where it needed to be."

Natalie Hagenow scored 8 points for the Chargers, and Lauren Ullmann added 6 points to the final total.

"Emily Kneer did a good job defending all night," Scasny said.

Hamilton was 7 for 13 on 3-point attempts and went 7 for 9 at the free-throw line.

On Friday, the Chargers continue pursuit of the conference championship when they meet Brookfield Central. HHS won a nail-biter the first time around and handed the Lancers their lone loss to this point in the season.

"This was a good one for us," Scasny said. "Hopefully we can keep it up."
