Playoff brackets arrive

WIAA football postseason brackets have begun filtering out into the world, and several local teams now know their destination.

The possibility for Arrowhead (7-1) to face Homestead in the Division 1 WIAA state title game for the fourth straight year remains intact, with the two powerhouses on opposite sides of the bracket. The Warhawks have a fourth seed and will face Janesville Parker (6-3). With a win, the Warhawks could rematch with Waukesha West (9-0) -- the only team to defeat Arrowhead all year -- in the second round. Other top seeds in the bracket are (2) Middleton(7-2) and (3) Verona Area (7-2). Marquette (9-0) is the top seed in the quadrant that would represent a potential state semifinal matchup.

Oconomowoc (5-4) will face Middleton in the first round, traveling to face the Cardinals on their home turf. The Raccoons are in the playoffs for the first time since 2005. (Note: this is a change from initial bracket, which pitted OHS against Madison Memorial).

Hamilton (7-2) caught a pretty bad break in Division 2, nestled in an awesome collection of teams, starting with fourth-seeded Cedarburg (8-1) in the first round. Only one team in the pool of eight has more than two losses, and top seeds include Monona Grove (9-0) -- a potential second-round opponent -- Waunakee (8-1) and DeForest (7-2).

Pewaukee (9-0) drew a top seed in Division 3, as expected, and will host Whitewater (5-4) in the first round. The other top seeds in the bracket are (2) Jefferson (8-1), (3) McFarland (8-1) and (4) Reedsburg Area (6-3) -- which faces Wisconsin Dells (4-5) in a first-round matchup that would provide Pewaukee's second-round opponent, should the Pirates also advance.

St. John's NW Military Academy (5-4) will hit the road to face second-seeded Winnebago Lutheran (8-1) in Division 4. A win would place the Lancers against Ripon (7-2) or North Fond du Lac (6-3).

For the first time in school history, Lake Country Lutheran (8-1) will host a playoff game in Division 6, battling Deerfield (5-4) in the first round. The second-seeded Lightning are in the same segment as (3) Brookfield Academy, and the two could rematch in the second round. LCL won that battle earlier this year. Other top seeds include Shiocton (9-0) and Racine Lutheran (7-2).

The game will be held on the artificial turf of Kettle Moraine High School.
