Honor sought for Willliam Cushing

Washington D.C. - Two members of the Wisconsin congressional delegation have asked the Secretary of the Navy to name a new combat ship after William Cushing, a Delafield native and Civil War Naval hero.

Republican U.S. Rep. James Sensenbrenner of Menomonee Falls and Democratic U.S. Rep Ron Kind of LaCrosse said in a letter to Secretary Raymond Mabus that Cushing deserved the honor because of his numerous heroic acts during the war including the sinking of the Confederate ship the Albermale.

They also pointed out that the Navy ship will be built in Wisconsin and will include components made in Wisconsin. There have been five previous Navy ships named for Cushing.

Cushing is the brother of Alonzo Cushing, another Delafield native and civil war hero. Sensenbrenner and Kind played key roles in the adoption of federal legislation that enables the Secretary of Defense and the Presidents to posthumously award the Medal of Honor to Alonzo Cushing.
