Hartland-Lakeside announces summer school program

Village of Hartland – Although it feels as if winter break just ended, the Hartland-Lakeside School Board has already approved at its Jan. 21 meeting a tentative schedule for summer school.

The curriculum places a heavy emphasis on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) courses, offering classes such as “Engineering with Legos” and “Objects in Motion, Forces at Work” for first and second graders.

Also emphasized are intervention courses to help students struggling in core areas, including an intensive, referral-only Reading Intervention course.

“I think our goal is that we have those students that really struggle, so getting them in during the summer and giving them that intensive instruction, we can start addressing that issue,” Superintendent Glenn Schilling said during the meeting.

The six-week class will be available to first, second and third graders who are referred by their teachers for increased instruction. The classes will have a maximum of ten children per class.

“Now it is just having those students come in every day,” joked Mary Stowasser, a former school administrator.

Jumpstart sessions have also been added in August to give students struggling in math and reading a leg up before the school year starts.
There will also be no charges for classes this year, except for fees for resource intensive courses.

Stowasser said the decision to eliminate fees was made to stay competitive with other districts, who do not charge for summer classes.

Online registration for summer school classes begins March 15 and must be completed by June 15. There are caps on enrollment, so parents are encouraged to register early.

Out of district families need to contact Maureen Lawler at or (262) 369-6767 Ext. 3309 to enroll.
