Penalties possible for curbside trash piles in Town of Mukwonago

The Mukwonago Town Board decided on Wednesday to give officials a new weapon to combat curbside dumping of trash.

Supervisor Tom Stefanowski said residents have been complaining about trash left out for bulk pick-up, sometimes for weeks at a time.

"The people are irate with me because I won't do something," he said, illustrating his point with pictures of refuse stacked nearly 4 feet high. "The garbage just sits out there for six weeks."

Unlike other municipalities in the area, John'sDisposal, leased by the town for trash pick-up, only offers bulk pick-up on the last Thursday of every other month, as opposed to every month.

Stefanowski said that bulk pick-up has been every other month for years and residents should be aware of it by now.

Board members said they would support a change to the ordinance allowing officials to penalize residents who do not remove trash after being given 24 hours notice.

Stefanowski said he could have a new ordinance written by the board's Dec. 19 meeting.

The next bulk pickup date is Jan. 31, 2013.
