AHS student seeks to help African students get to school on right foot

Jan. 7, 2013

Children in Africa have an opportunity to walk a mile in your shoes, thanks to Arrowhead High School senior Abby Kush.

Kush has organized a shoe drive, and is requesting community members to drop off their old footwear in bins located in the main office of the high school.

Kush said it was her sister who inspired her to first start the project.

"She went on a trip to Africa this past summer," Kush said. "She came back with so many stories about the way they live … and got to thinking about ways I can help."

This is her first time organizing such an event, but said she has participated in other charitable events at her church, including Operation Christmas Child and Feed My Starving Children. She said her school has offered a lot of support, publicizing the drive through morning announcements and sending out emails to parents.

"I honestly planned on getting around 20 pairs of shoes," Kush said. "Right now I'm at around 150 pairs!"

The drive ends on Jan. 11. The main office is on the north campus. Kush is also requesting financial donations to offset the cost of shipping. Cash or checks made out to Kush can be left in the main office.
