Summit residents sign petition for flooding solutions

Town of Summit officials and residents are working to create a utility district to help pay for the cost of installing a flood mitigation system to control the high lake levels in Lower Genesee Lake and alleviate high ground water levels in the Genesee Lake Farm subdivision.

Town officials have asked residents from 180 properties - that would benefit from the project - to sign a petition in support of the district. Once the petition is complete, the town will accept a $506,000 Community Development Block Grant which will partially fund the project.  The residents will fund the remaining $250,000 needed to install an outlet pipe in Lower Genesee Lake and a drain tile system in the subdivision to help control high water levels.

The town will hold a public hearing at 7 p.m. Sept. 3 to hear comments from residents on this topic. However, the board may not make a decision on creating the district until its October meeting.
